AC Rating Guide: What It Means for Your Home

AC (Abrasion Class) rating measures how well laminate resists wear under foot traffic. The rating system runs AC1 to AC5. Most homeowners need AC3 or AC4.

RatingDescriptionBest ForExpected Life
AC1Moderate residential — very light foot trafficClosets, spare bedrooms10–15 years
AC2General residential — normal household foot trafficBedrooms, home offices15–20 years
AC3Heavy residential / light commercialLiving rooms, dining rooms, hallways20–25 years
AC4General commercial — heavy foot trafficHigh-traffic residential, entryways, rentals25–30 years
AC5Heavy commercial — extreme durabilityRetail, public spaces; overkill for most homes30+ years

Thickness Guide: 6mm vs 8mm vs 10mm vs 12mm

Thickness affects feel underfoot, sound absorption, and how forgiving the laminate is of minor subfloor imperfections. Thicker is generally better — but there are diminishing returns above 12mm.

6–7mm
$0.89–$1.50/sqft
Feel underfoot
Noticeably hollow underfoot
Sound
Loud — echoes footsteps
Subfloor tolerance
Less than 1/4" subfloor variance
Fine for bedrooms and offices with separate underlayment
8mm
$1.50–$2.50/sqft
Feel underfoot
Slightly hollow, noticeable on soft spots
Sound
Moderate
Subfloor tolerance
Up to 3/16" subfloor variance
Good entry-mid option for general residential use
10–12mm
$2.50–$4.50/sqft
Feel underfoot
Solid, closer to hardwood feel
Sound
Quieter — especially with cork underlay
Subfloor tolerance
Up to 3/16" subfloor variance — more forgiving
Best value for main living areas and high-traffic rooms
12mm+ (waterproof)
$4.00–$6.00+/sqft
Feel underfoot
Most solid, premium feel
Sound
Best sound absorption in the class
Subfloor tolerance
Most forgiving of subfloor imperfections
Best-in-class — worth it for kitchens and main living areas

Underlayment Cost Breakdown

Underlayment is a mandatory part of laminate installation — it cushions the floor, absorbs sound, and provides a moisture barrier. Budget $0.15–$1.00/sqft for this component.

TypeCost / sqftBest ForNotes
Foam (basic)$0.15–$0.3/sqftOver wood subfloor, dry areasBasic cushion. No moisture protection — don't use over concrete.
Foam + Vapour Barrier$0.3–$0.5/sqftOver concrete slabThe standard choice when installing over concrete. Vapour barrier prevents moisture transmission.
Cork (sound-dampening)$0.4–$0.75/sqftUpper floors, apartments, noise reductionBest sound absorption. Natural material. Worth the premium in multi-storey homes.
Premium Cork/Foam Combo$0.6–$1/sqftOver concrete in apartmentsMaximum sound reduction + moisture barrier in one product.
Critical note: Many mid-range and premium laminate products (including most Shaw and Mohawk lines at 10mm+) come with underlayment pre-attached to the bottom of the planks. Do not add a second underlay layer if the laminate already has attached underlay — the added thickness causes the locking joints to fail. Check the product specification before buying separate underlayment.
